2016 OBHBA Food Pantry Drive Challenge

2016 OBHBA Food Pantry Drive ChallengeNOVEMBER. Thanksgiving. Food Pantry. 2016 OBHBA Food Pantry Drive Challenge.

For the last 11 years, the Outer Banks Home Builders Association (OBHBA) Food Pantry Drive has raised 5.5 tons of food across Dare Country groceries during our Saturday one day blitz collection drives.

However, with Kroger’s acquisition of Harris Teeter last year, the rules have changed. We can no longer solicit shoppers to buy a few extra items for the local Food Pantry when they have an in-store promotion going on. Food Lion is following Kroger’s lead with in-store collections. While we are happy that these stores are working to fight hunger, their collections do not directly support our local food pantries, as our OBHBA Food Panty Drive has always done.

What can we do? During the November 14th OBHBA membership meeting Kenny Pekrun, Food Drive Chairman, issued a CASH CHALLENGE. Our goal is to collect $3,500 in cash by Friday, November 18, 2016, and donate the funds to local area pantries. These local food pantries can purchase food directly from the Albemarle Food Bank, where they pay about 35 cents on the dollar.

We collected $880 in cash from seven people at the November 14th meeting.  Phone calls and emails arrived today from three more attendees.  Help us reach our goal!

Being thankful for what we have and demonstrating it by supporting those in our community who need a little extra help is the OBHBA Way – and it just doesn’t get much better than that.

In advance, thanks to all of you who can give. “If everyone does a little, no one has to do a lot.”
