Dare County Beach Nourishment Update

Dare County Beach Nourishment

Several beaches in the towns of Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills have started the beach nourishment process.

Beach nourishment is the process of pumping sand onto an eroding shoreline to widen the existing beach. Sources of sand may include a nearby sandbar, a dredged source such as an inlet or waterway, or an offshore borrow site along the ocean floor. The widened shoreline provides increased defense from coastal storms and beach erosion protecting property, communities, and infrastructure located along the shoreline. Below is the latest update.

On May 31, 2017, a public meeting was held in the Paul F. Keller Meeting Hall at 1:00 p.m. At this meeting, Coastal Planning and Engineering and Great Lakes Dredge and Dock (GLDD) presented an update on the Town of Duck Beach Nourishment project. A video recording is available for viewing here, on our Town website, and social media outlets. Julien Devisse, with Coastal Planning and Engineering, presented on the progress to date, as well as a tentative schedule.

The Padre Island arrived on-site June 1. Upon completion of the pre-dredge checklist, it began work on the northern boundary with the Dodge Island dredge (see photo). These two dredges are expected to take turns pumping onto the beach and refilling at the Borrow Area C (see photo).  Currently, they are still constructing the pad on which to place equipment. They will soon switch the shore pipe to pump north and complete the northern boundary to the taper.

On June 1, the Town received word that the Liberty Island, the dredge working at the southern end of the project zone, has experienced some mechanical issues and will be down for some time to complete repairs. During this time, the construction footprint on the beach will be minimized until the Liberty Island returns.
It is important to keep in mind that all schedules are tentative and subject to change as weather and mechanical issues may arise. GLDD will continue to do their best to keep beach access open and finish as quickly as possible.
