For the past 30 years, we’ve had the privilege of designing and building custom homes along North Carolina’s Outer Banks. During that time, we’ve watched countless design trends come and go. Dark cherry cabinets gave way to bright white kitchens. Gray seemed to be everywhere before warmer; more natural tones found their way back into homes.
Trends are part of what makes design fun, but the homes we admire most years later aren’t the ones that followed every trend. They’re the ones built around thoughtful layouts, quality craftsmanship, and spaces that simply feel good to live in.
As we celebrate Sandmark’s 30th anniversary, we found ourselves asking a simple question:
If we were building our own home today, what design decisions would we make all over again?
The answer came surprisingly easy.
1. Let Natural Light Do the Work
We’ve never had a homeowner tell us they wished they’d installed fewer windows.
Natural light changes the way a home feels. It makes rooms feel larger, brighter, and more welcoming while connecting the indoors with the beauty that surrounds them. Here on the Outer Banks, that’s especially important. Whether you’re looking toward the ocean, the sound, or a maritime forest, those views become part of the home itself.
Thoughtfully placed windows, open sightlines, and rooms designed around natural light will never go out of style.

2. Design the Kitchen Around People
The kitchen has always been more than a place to prepare meals.
It’s where coffee is poured before sunrise, where kids finish homework, where holiday meals come together, and where everyone somehow ends up standing around the island no matter how much seating you’ve provided elsewhere.
Rather than chasing the newest finishes, we encourage homeowners to focus first on layout, storage, and gathering space. Those are the details that continue to matter long after trends have changed.

3. Invest in Materials That Improve with Age
One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned over the years is that quality materials rarely go out of style.
Real wood, natural stone, custom cabinetry, and thoughtful millwork develop character as the years pass. Instead of looking dated, they often become even more beautiful.
That’s not to say every home should look the same. We love helping each family create a home that reflects their personality. But timeless materials create a foundation that allows a home to evolve gracefully for decades.

4. Think Beyond the Back Door
On the Outer Banks, outdoor living isn’t an afterthought.
Some of our favorite memories happen on covered porches, around pools, gathered near outdoor fireplaces, or simply enjoying dinner outside with family after a day at the beach.
When outdoor spaces are designed as an extension of the home rather than a separate feature, they become some of the most-used rooms you’ll ever have.

5. Never Compromise on Craftsmanship
Beautiful finishes catch your attention.
Quality craftsmanship earns your confidence.
Perfectly aligned trim, carefully designed built-ins, thoughtful details, and work done with pride are often the things homeowners appreciate more each year they live in the home.
While these details may not always be the first thing guests notice, they’re often what make a home feel solid, timeless, and truly custom.

Although this home was finished recently, we believe the same design principles that shaped it today will still feel just as relevant decades from now. That’s the goal with every custom home we build—to create spaces that feel beautiful not just when they’re finished, but for many years to come.
As we celebrate 30 years of Sandmark, we’re incredibly grateful for every family that has trusted us with their home. Looking back has reminded us that while styles may change, thoughtful design, lasting craftsmanship, and homes built around the people who live in them never will.
